Sushant, born in 1981, an IIT post-graduate and a banker by profession is a
recreational athlete. As a child, he only focused on his studies and never
ventured out into sports at all. At the beginning of his career, he worked
as an Investment Banker with some top MNC's like Royal Bank of Scotland. Now
he runs his own business.
One fine day, he realised that he had put on some weight and decided to
plunge into an organic way of losing it rather than venture into dieting.
That’s when running happened to him! To his surprise, it came naturally to
him. He joined a local running group and registered for his first formal run
in October 2014 - CRPF Half Marathon which he completed in 01.50.26. This
encouraged him further and he decided to run a full marathon in just three
months of his first half, in Mumbai. He completed his first full Marathon at
Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon in 2015 in 04.07.01.
The journey had begun, he never looked back and travelled to Dubai, Canada,
Ladakh, Jim Corbett for his full marathons. In Delhi, he decided to run only
2-3 main events a year including Airtel Delhi Half Marathon (ADHM) and New

Umesh Gupta has a long-distance running experience of over a decade and over
the years has run many Half Marathons and a few Marathons and Ultras. A
Mountaineering course led him to realize his passion for endurance sports
and since then there has been no looking back for him. After the initial a
flurry of events across the country and various distances he has largely
restricted himself to Half Marathons and has focused himself to running the
Airtel Half Marathon (ADHM) as his one run where he likes to dedicate his
complete attention to giving his best. Over the years he has improved his
timing from over 2 hours to 1hour 35 minutes at ADHM. His passion for
recreational running is so strong that he enjoys running in exotic locations
like LahaulSpiti where he along with a few friends, ran over 160 km at
heights over 12000 feet on an average and in global locations like New
Zealand, Scotland, Ireland, Thailand and Malaysia.
He has been regularly pacing the two-hour bus in various events in Delhi NCR
over the last couple of years since he realized that there is greater joy in
making many realize their goal and personal best than to realize another
personal best of his own.
He believes running is one of the best forms of exercise and over the years
has started coaching/training new runners to get initiated into his unique
program of 0-5 km in 2 months with running just two days in a week. His
passion for events also led him to become part of the core team which
organizes two of the best running events in Delhi NCR; the Trail-A-thon and

Currently, Umesh is training some runners to successfully complete the Leh
Marathon, considered to be one of the toughest Marathon in the world. He has
also evolved a unique methodology of training runners wherein he works with
them on each run depending on the runner’s physical and mental condition on
that day and training history rather than give a one off-plan. Umesh prides
in doing all this pro bono as he feels he owes it to the sport and
propagation of the same is his responsibility too.
Besides running, Umesh is an avid trekker and has done a number of easy to
difficult treks and expeditions in the Himalayas. He is also very passionate

40 marathons / Ultramarathons and numerous shorter runs in and outside
India. Sunil took up running over 15 years ago, and among his significant
runs are the Leh marathon, Berlin marathon, London marathon, marathon de
Medoc, the original marathon from Marathon to Athens, 100 km Bangalore Ultra
and Comrades. He has a Personal HM best of 1:48:01 and has been a 10K and HM
pacer at several events (including ADHM and TCS 10K) besides pacing friends
on an individual basis.
Sunil has been the Team leader of the Indian team for World 100 k in Croatia
on September 2018 and the Indian 24-hour team at the Asia Oceania
championships in Taipei on December 2018, where India won its first-ever
international medals in Ultrarunning. Prior to taking up distance running,
Sunil was a National ranked squash player and has participated in several
top tournaments in India and UK.
Sunil is a management consultant and Advisor to the Board of several reputed
companies and is also a guest faculty member at some of the top business
schools in and outside India - he is a great believer in the contribution
sports make towards building good managers and leaders and is sponsor of the
best sportsman award at his alma mater, IIM, Ahmedabad. Despite a hectic
travel schedule, he manages to spend time running or in the gym at least 4-5
times a week - and has managed to explore the streets of many new cities in
and outside India by running.
Sunil believes in the mantra - 'you need to be fit to play a sport, not play
a sport to get fit' - and has advised several upcoming younger runners on
how to supplement running with other exercises for strength, flexibility and
balance. He also believes people can take up running fairly late in life -
this being inspired by his meeting the legendary Fauja Singh, who ran his
first marathon at the tender age of 89!!
With sport being an integral part of his life, Sunil now wishes to spend
more time encouraging runners to help improve their running. Several runners
who accompanied his HM bus during the past year have not just finished
strong but improved their PBs by over 5 minutes. One of Sunil's goals is to
try to get more 10k runners to train for an HM and for HM runners to train
for a Full marathon and he dreams of the day when a marathon in India could
become a major like London or New York.

While Bijender was carving out his career, he realized a couple of years ago
that his health was not at its best & that’s when he took up running in
early 2015! His story is interesting because he made that rare transition
from a diabetic to non-diabetic & has inspired people to take the cause of

Having undergone a knee surgery earlier, he never thought of running
marathons although he gradually increased his stamina and started doing
regular 5km stretches to keep himself fit. There was a sense of achievement
when 2 years later another checkup revealed a healthy report.
His first half marathon was ADHM in November 2017. He would have never done
it if it not been for his colleagues after which he started practicing
together with them. Running has kept him motivated and rigorous training
helped him complete his first ADHM in 2017 in 2:11:06 time against his
target time of 2:20. He needs to let go of many opportunities during
2017-2018 due to calf muscle tear. After recovering from a muscle tear, he
started running again and in Aug 2018 did his 10km in 1:00:06.
He has run 7 half marathons and his PB is 2:01 at Run Bhopal Run 2018. He
successfully paced ADHM 2018 which was his first pacing opportunity.
ADHM 2019 presented him another opportunity to pace the same bus. He is
energized to pace and want to encourage the group with the same energy. He
wants to successfully hit the target time.
He is not a fitness freak person but loves being fit. Professionally he is
the CTO for Airtel B2B department. Work keeps him extremely busy for most of
the days, but he ensures to take out 1 hour in the morning towards his
fitness. In fact, fitness is what keeps his mind fresh the whole day and
improve productivity at work.
He tends to lead by examples and this pacing opportunity gives him just
another chance to do that.
Mr. Nikhil Arora, a 9-year veteran of the Airtel Delhi Marathon is coming
back for his tenth run this year. And he would like to do this by giving
back to the event what he gained from it as a first-time runner –
inspiration and encouragement from the pacers who’ve done it all before.
Running is a way for Nikhil to right-zone and refocus his mind. Nikhil Arora
is actively involved in advising and mentoring startups and small
businesses. Nikhil has been a serial innovator and helped launch several
new businesses in his tenure at various organizations and is passionate
about grassroots innovation and “giving voice to good ideas” wherever those
ideas may come from. As Managing Director and Vice President of India at
GoDaddy Inc, Mr. Arora is a business leader with a fast-paced professional
life. Running reflects his personal journey to excellence – a continuous
cycle of doing something new and exceeding his previous performances.
Nikhil has been running for a decade now and has completed over 25 Full and
Half Marathons in India, Asia Pacific, Middle-East, Europe and North
America. He has also completed the world’s largest running relay race in
Portland, USA, – Hood to Coast - which is a 199-mile team relay event. In
2013 alone, he ran four full and ultra-marathons: the Mumbai Marathon in
January; the London Marathon in April; the extreme Bhatti Lakes Ultra racing
event in October and the Gurgaon Town and Country Full Marathon in
December. His personal best has been a time of 1:49 minutes. Nikhil keeps
things interesting by also participating in extreme fitness events like X
Warrior and the Devil’s Circuit.
In 2017-18, he decided to push himself beyond running by completing four
triathlons, including two back-to-back IronMan 70.3 races in Dubai and
Colombo in February 2018. A combination race including a swim in the open
sea, a cycling race and a run, training for and participating in triathlons
has helped Nikhil pushes the envelope again on his abilities and endurance.
He is a committed fitness enthusiast and ensures that he trains everyday
despite packed work and travelling schedules. His fitness training routine
includes boxing, TRX, strength training and yoga.
Nikhil also believes that making running and fitness a part of your life is
a great way to learn humility and an appreciation of your own and others’
struggles. He remembers his own efforts as a new marathoner and is keen to
help other runners achieve their personal bests as a pacer in this marathon.
He believes he can help his team complete the run in 2:25 hrs. minutes, and
to achieve this, his mantra will be to:

Ashish was the usual morning walker in the neighbourhood park until he met a
distance runner 3 years back. And this person introduced him to the world of
long-distance running. Pretty soon he joined one of the largest running
groups in India (i.e. DRG). And started going for the weekend runs with
them. Once into it, he realized that there is another world out there
wherein people shun off their weekend parties to get up early for the long
runs. And soon running became an integral part of his life. Whether in town
or travelling, Ashish tries to go out for his morning runs. As per him
another advantage of running is that he gets the chance to explore the less
explored parts of the world. Whenever on vacations he tries to do at least
one run of HM plus distance. As per him running made him a more disciplined
and environment-friendly person.
Also, the newfound stamina and strength reignited his other passion i.e.
trekking. Last year he successfully completed the trek to Mt. Stok Kangiri
(20,000 + ft height) As a professional Ashish works as Director service
delivery with Jobline India Pvt ltd.
He has participated in many full marathons and half marathons including TMM,
ADHM, Ladakh and few other trails runs. His personal best times are 1.45 and

achieve their aim.

time off from the digital world. He loves running to Buddhist chants and
as soon as he finds his cadence and rhythm, running becomes akin to
meditation for him.
Neeraj was introduced to running by his girlfriend (and now wife) who had
been a runner for a few years. At the time Neeraj was dealing with a stiff

sport and workout routine. But he could run. He started out slowly and now
for the past two years, he and his wife have been running together.
His first half marathon was the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon in 2017, followed
by his second half at the IDBI Federal Life Insurance – Delhi in March 2018.
His personal best has been 2 hr 17 mi 35 sec.
This year Neeraj chose to apply to be a pacer as he likes the positivity and
uplifting mood around a bus. While running together there is a shared
camaraderie and a common purpose amongst runners. He still remembers how in
his second half marathon it was a pacer’s zeal and motivation that helped
him sustain his pace till the finish line. Neeraj believes that being a
pacer will help him contribute to the running world from where he has learnt
virtues such as patience, determination and zest. As a pacer, he is looking
