HISTORY OF THE EVENT

Buoyed by the success of the opening edition of the Mumbai Marathon (now Tata Mumbai Marathon), Procam zeroed in on the capital city of India, New Delhi, for the next global property and thus started the journey of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.

With the introduction of the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon, little did cynics believe that the people of Delhi would embrace running as lifestyle and turn up in great numbers to set a new benchmark year on year.

The event is touted as one of the fastest courses in the world and over the years the event has consistently recorded the top five fastest HM timings in the world. Champions like world former HM world record holder Zersenay Tadese (Eritrea), Florence Kilpagat (Kenya), Almaz Ayana (Ethiopia), Tirunesh Dibaba (Ethiopia) have made their mark in Delhi. Along with them former world record holder over 4 road running distances - 5K, 10K, 15K, 21K Joyciline Jepkosgei (Kenya), specialised half marathon runner Worknesh Degefa (Ethiopia), the London 2012 Olympic Marathon Champion Stephen Kiprotich (Uganda) and Rio Olympics 5th place marathon finisher Alphonce Sambu (Tanzania) are others.

Global marathon running legend Eliud Kipchoge chose to run Delhi after his Rio Olympic gold and claimed the title for the Airtel Delhi Marathon 2016. The event has also been a springboard for Indian elites, Aspiring gun like Abhishek Pal, winning the coveted Airtel Delhi Half Marathon - amongst Asian Marathon Champions.

Global sporting icons have endorsed the event as ambassadors – Asafa Powell, Sanya Richards Ross, Carmalita Jetter, Daley Thompson, Jackie-Joyner Kersee, Sir Richard Hadlee, Alan Border and Cathy Freeman among others.

The Airtel Delhi Half Marathon is a haven for runners, creating an experience, that our citizens had never envisaged. The streets of Delhi converted to a world-class running track. Clean, sanitized road for 21.09 kms, exhaustive medical support system on the route, timing chip for runners, qualified personnel to ensure smooth conduct of the event across departments. The race route for this unique distance running category, is charted route taking runners across some of Delhi’s iconic landmarks like – Lodhi Garden, Jantar Mantar and of course the India Gate. Ancillary events and community engagement opportunities for brands and runners alike. All of the above and more is what makes the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon is an AIMS-certified course and is listed as a Gold Label Road Race by the World Athletics Association and the world’s most prestigious half marathons.

Apart from sporting excellence, ADHM continues to be one of the largest sporting philanthropy platforms in the country. India Cares foundation, the official philanthropy partner, along with fundraisers have raised a whopping total of Rs 76.82 crore towards charity. 'Giving’, through the platform of ADHM has set new milestones each year.
